Why is Auto-Brightness This Finicky?
No, Apple didn’t gloss over this important feature, they just tried to implement a method that makes the brightness adjustment automatic and organic so you don’t notice it that often. However, if you’re unaware of how it works and you’ve been manually adjusting it to your levels and then finding out the iPhone has adjusted the brightness to a different level. It’s by design.
How Does Auto-Brightness Works on iPhone?
The iPhone uses the inbuilt ambient light sensor to adjust the brightness according to your surroundings. So if you’re in a dark room, the iPhone would gradually lower the brightness levels and similarly increase it when you move to a well-lit place. However, if you set the brightness manually in any setting then the iPhone would only go to that level of brightness. For instance, if you lower the brightness to 20% in a completely dark room, it would never go below that level automatically until you manually adjust that level. Alternatively, if you ramp up the brightness to only 50% under a bright sun, the iPhone would learn to not take the brightness up beyond that point. This would lead to your iPhone brightness going down when you go to a less bright place such as a normal room. This is why you may find the Auto-Brightness feature irritating as it is lowering the brightness in a well-lit room. Whereas in reality, it is working as intended and you set it to go to 50% brightness in a super bright environment.
Turn Off Auto-Brightness on iPhone
The section above was to explain how auto-brightness on iPhone actually works but if you still wish to turn it off, you can do it in the Settings. Open the Settings app and go to Accessibility Settings. Find and tap Display & Text Size to open its settings. Scroll down all the way to the bottom and toggle the switch off next to Auto-brightness. That’s it. Your iPhone would no longer adjust the brightness automatically. However, if you wish to lower the brightness of your iPhone beyond its lowest point, toggle the switch on next to Reduce White Point and adjust the slider until it suits your needs. You can read more about it here.
Closing Words: Turn Off Auto-Brightness in iPhone
This was a quick way to turn off the auto-brightness feature on your iPhone. Mind you, turning off the auto-brightness can reduce your iPhone’s battery life if you keep it at extremely high brightness. A better solution is set to set your own personal high and low points so auto-brightness won’t breach those levels. What do you think? Did you know how the auto-brightness worked on iPhone?
